Engineered vs. Solid Hardwood: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Both are real wood. The difference is in the construction — and that difference decides where you can install it, how it handles humidity, and how many times you can refinish it.



One of the most common questions we get on estimates is some version of: "Is engineered hardwood real wood?" Yes — it absolutely is. The wear layer you see and walk on is the same sawn hardwood as a solid plank. What's different is what's underneath.

Solid hardwood

An engineered plank has a real hardwood wear layer (typically 2 mm to 6 mm thick) bonded to a multi-ply plywood or HDF core. That cross-laminated core resists expansion and contraction, which means engineered flooring can go where solid often shouldn't: basements, slab-on-grade installations, and over properly designed radiant heat systems. Engineered hardwood

Oil-based finishes have been the workhorse of the industry for decades. They self-level beautifully, build film fast (usually 2–3 coats), and add a warm amber glow to oak that a lot of homeowners specifically want. The trade-off is dry time — typically 8–12 hours between coats and several days before the floor is ready for furniture — and stronger fumes during application.

How many times can you refinish each?

  • Solid 3/4" hardwood: typically 4–6 full sand-and-refinish cycles.
  • Engineered with a 4–6 mm wear layer: 2–4 cycles, very close to solid.
  • Engineered with a 2 mm wear layer: usually 1 light screen-and-recoat, not a full sand.

Sustainability

Engineered flooring uses less of the slow-growing hardwood species per square foot, which is one reason many specifiers look for certified sources. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is the most widely recognized certification for responsibly harvested wood — ask your contractor whether the product you're considering is FSC-certified.

Quick decision guide

  • Above-grade, traditional home, want maximum lifespan → solid hardwood.
  • Slab, basement, condo, or radiant heat → engineered with a thick wear layer.
  • Wide planks (7"+) → engineered usually performs better long-term.
  • Budget-driven and want real wood → engineered with a 2–3 mm wear layer.



Whichever route you take, both are real hardwood and both can look stunning. The key is matching the construction to the room — not the marketing brochure to the showroom.

Gaps in winter, cupping in summer — most hardwood "problems" are actually humidity problems. Here's the simple range to hold in your home, and how to hold it. Wood is hygroscopic. That's a fancy way of saying it gives up moisture when the air is dry and absorbs moisture when the air is humid — and as it does, it shrinks and swells. Every solid and engineered floor we install is acclimated to do this within a narrow, predictable range. Step outside that range and you start seeing the symptoms homeowners panic about: hairline gaps between planks in winter, slightly cupped edges in late summer.
